Taranaki’s Jamie Cameron kicked 23 out of 28 points in the Hurricanes’ first ever match against the Blues in 1996, including seven penalties and a conversion (centre Alama Ieremia scored the try). The prolific point scoring first five-eighth went on to kick a further 62 points in six other appearances for the Hurricanes in 1996.

Cameron had played 70 first class matches when he was selected in the inaugural Hurricanes team, having played 17 matches for North Harbour in 1990-1991 and 53 matches for Taranaki between 1992-1995. In 1995 Cameron broke two Taranaki points scoring records - kicking 233 season points and scoring 34 points in a match against Nelson Bays. Other representative honours included two years in the New Zealand Secondary Schools side in 1986-1987 and the New Zealand Divisional team in 1996.

Cameron left to play in England for the London Irish club in 1997, helping the then second division side earn promotion to the top tier Premiership for 1998. But a broken ankle forced him home to New Zealand where he played one last season for Taranaki in 1999 - answering a call from then coach Colin Cooper after the departure of Jason Holland overseas.

Post rugby, Cameron worked in real estate in New Plymouth, coached club rugby in Perth, and had a stint on the Gold Coast before returning home to Taranaki with his family to live.
