Scott Waldrom

Openside Flanker

Bio

In 2009 Scott Waldrom suffered a cruel injury when he broke three bones in his back during the Hurricanes’ 10-14 semi-final loss to the Chiefs. Aside from its seriousness, the injury also ruled him out of All Blacks contention for the international season. The player known to his team mates as Scooter was sidelined for three months and made his comeback for Taranaki in the Air New Zealand Cup - but was then forced back to the sidelines with a knee injury.

He made his return to the Hurricanes for his fourth season in 2010, but played just eight matches and lost out on a starting position at openside flanker to rival Karl Lowe after the round five defeat to the Stormers.

Previously, in 2008 Wellington and Taranaki openside flanker Waldrom had added 10 caps to his one previous appearance for the Hurricanes in 2005, including five in the starting side, where his extra speed and commitment proved a huge asset to the side en route to the semi-finals.

This form and his consistent play for Taranaki in the Air New Zealand Cup didn’t go unnoticed by the All Blacks selectors either and he was duly picked for the end of the season tour to Hong Kong and Europe, making his debut against Irish province Munster in an epic 18-16 win.

Waldrom first earned his place into the Hurricanes in 2005 after previously spending 2004 with the Crusaders and making one appearance against the Hurricanes.

A dynamo flanker and New Zealand Sevens representative with speed to burn and ball skills to match, Waldrom had scored eight tries in his 21 first class appearances for the Vodafone Wellington Lions between 2002-2004 and had also played for New Zealand Maori in 2004.

But an innocuous broken bone in his foot sustained in the warm-ups for the Maori in a match against Canada in 2004 curtailed his 2005 season before it had barely begun and almost ended his career. The injury flared up at the start of the new season, and Waldrom was forced on to crutches after just one appearance for the Hurricanes against the Bulls in Wellington.

He fought back from adversity and in 2006 was loaned by Wellington to Taranaki for the inaugural Air New Zealand Cup. He was then reselected in the New Zealand Sevens team at the start of 2007, before making the New Zealand Maori Churchill Cup side in May 2007, where he was a try scorer in their first game against Canada.

The older brother of Thomas Waldrom, Scott first played for the New Zealand Sevens side in two tournaments in 2002. He was named Taranaki Player of the Year in 2007.

Scooter Waldrom was one of the form players in the 2011 ITM Cup, putting on several masterful displays in the number seven jersey for Taranaki and helping them lift the Ranfurly Shield off Southland and successfully defend it in their only challenge of the year against Hawke's Bay.

In 2013 he helped coach the Dutch Women’s Seven team at the Sevens RWC in Russia. He was also appointed coach of the Wellington Sevens team and guided Wellington to the National Sevens title in Rotorua in January 2014.
