Cory Jane’s hairstyle has chopped and changed a fair bit over the past nine years, but his attitude toward playing for the Hurricanes hasn’t wavered during his 99 matches for the club.
"I just love playing for this team. I grew up wanting to be a [Wellington] Lion and a Hurricane and an All Black, so to be able to do all that is pretty cool," said Jane.
"I hate losing, I'm competitive. Like, if I was playing against someone and we were changing nappies, I'm going to win. That's just the way I am and I'm made."
The 33-year-old will become the eight player to gain 100 caps for the Hurricanes when he runs out against the Jaguares at Westpac Stadium tonight joining an exclusive club with Tana Umaga, Rodney So’oialo, Neemia Tialata, Ma’a Nonu, Andrew Hore, Conrad Smith and Jeremy Thrush.
Jane’s scored 24 tries since he dotted down on debut against the Reds in Brisbane in 2007 and has become a fan favourite for his personality off the field.
The hair styles have come and gone from the dreadlocks to the blond spikes and moustache to the short back and sides, but there has also been a serious side to a seriously good player and the Upper Hutt stalwart says he’s far from done trying to press for higher honours.
“I feel better than I have the last couple of years...guys are getting younger and faster and you don't see too many 33 year old wingers running around these days so I'll show them eh?
"I still want to be an All Black ...and I am going to keep working hard to try and be one. If it doesn't happen then I had eight years of fun but I am still playing the game to try and get there."
Jane’s big motivation has always been his family and with wife Amie and his children in the stands at Westpac Stadium tonight that won’t change against the Jaguares.
"I've always told the boys, and people around, that when it's not about me I can be the life of the party. But when it's about me I kind of get a little bit embarrassed and within myself, so it's one of those kind of awkward things at the moment.”
His long-time coach Chris Boyd has no such issues talking about his wing.
"He's been fantastic for this club. He's comfortably the most intelligent outside back that I have ever coached. He's got a massive understanding of the game that very few people appreciate. He has a very positive impact on a lot of other people as well.
"It's like all things you've got to have a balance. If you had 30 Cory Jane's in your team it might be somewhat of a shambles but to have one or two is fantastic and he gets balanced out by other people's personalities.”
