Aspiring Hurricanes selected for Under-18 Development Camp

The next generation of Hurricanes rugby stars have been selected for the 2023 Hurricanes Under-18 development camp.

Fifty players will attend the camp that will run from October 3-6, based at the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport (NZCIS) in Trentham.

Fourteen schools and one club are represented in the playing group with Feilding High School relishing from their Central North Island (CNI) First XV competition victory with eight representatives selected.

Hurricanes Recruitment and Development Manager, and Under-18 head coach, Darren Larsen, said he was excited about the prospect of what this group can achieve in the future, after picking a squad from a very competitive pool of players.

"This was a tough group to select. We started with 300 nominations from players in our region who were part of teams in CNI playoffs; Fielding winning the competition; and with teams in the National Top 4 playoffs. We have a very competitive group with us, and with 16 players selected in NZ teams, it’s fair to say the region is looking strong for the future.”

Over the duration of the camp, the playing group will work on core rugby components such as game performance, physical conditioning demands, mental skills, nutrition education and the Hurricanes Pathway.

At the conclusion of the camp the playing group will travel to Blenheim on October 7 to play the Crusaders Under-18s.
