Barrett brothers, Coles scoop major prizes at ASB Rugby Awards

Barrett scoops top award in big night for Canes

Beauden Barrett capped a stellar night for the Hurricanes by winning the coveted Kelvin Tremain Memorial Player of the Year Award.

The 25-year-old first-five scooped the top award at the 2016 ASB New Zealand Rugby Awards in Auckland, but it was a night for everyone at the Hurricanes to celebrate as the club walked away with five awards.

Barrett was also named Investec Super Rugby Player of the Year after guiding the Hurricanes to their first title during a season that saw him score 223 points.

The personal awards capped off an incredible year that had earlier seen the Taranaki born speedster named World Rugby Player of the Year Award.

And Beauden wasn't the only member of his family carting some silverware home after his younger brother Jordie, one of the Hurricanes newest recruits after signing up for the 2017 season, scooped the Mitre 10 Cup and New Zealand Age Grade Player of the Year awards.

Fittingly Hurricanes captain Dane Coles (Ngati Porou) was not left without recognition after leading the club to the 2016 Investec Super Rugby crown, as he was awarded the Tom French Memorial Cup for Maori Player of the Year, edging out teammate TJ Perenara for the prestigious award.

Hurricanes head coach Chris Boyd was headed off by All Blacks mentor Steve Hansen for the Coach of the Year Award, while the might All Blacks were named adidas Team of the Year.

To cap off a night that highlighted the Hurricanes success, young Wanganui wing Te Rangatira Waitokia was named the Mitre 10 Heartland Championship Player of the Year after scoring 12 tries during the Butcher Boys run to the Meads Cup title.
