Canes run in 11 tries against Melbourne Rebels

Milner-Skudder bags hattrick in Rebels rout

The sun shone and the tries rained at Westpac  Stadium where the Hurricanes beat the Melbourne Rebels 71-6 to celebrate the team's first home match of the Investec Super Rugby season.

Running in eleven tries in front of 15,103 fans at the ground known to fans as Our House, the Hurricanes banked maximum competition points for the second week running to remain on top of the competition ladder.

Fullback Nehe Milner-Skudder scored a hattrick to celebrate his first match at Westpac Stadium since 2015, while wing Vince Aso and second five Ngani Laumape also scored two each.

Matt Proctor, Ardie Savea, Reed Prinsep and Julian Savea also crossed the try line before full time.

First five Beauden Barrett knocked over six conversions, and Otere Black added two, to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Halfback and vice captain TJ Perenara said starting the season with back to back wins was great, but would not change from the squad's focus on winning every moment rather than focusing on results.

"A lot of the time you only get that satisfaction if the scoreline falls in your favour. What we're trying to drive in our environment is trying to win small moments and getting excited about that stuff," said Perenara.

"So we know that at the end of the day we get judged on whether we come off the field with more points than the other team. But in our circle we want to win a ruck, we want to win a scrum, we want to win a lineout. So it's about having that mindset to want to win each moment in a game and continue to do that for the duration of the season and duration of the game."

Perenara said keeping their try line in tact was more pleasing than scoring eleven tries.

"It makes me happy that they didn't score against us. I'm still not happy that we got scored on last week," Perenara said.

"Defence is something we want to pride ourselves on, it's something we put a lot of effort into and it's reality; you limit them scoring, you limit the points that you have to score."

The Rebels simply had no answer to the Hurricanes speed of foot and hand in the Wellington sun and it didn't take long for Milner-Skudder to open the scoring when he cut inside Barrett to run in under the posts.

It was a popular try for the local crowd who hadn't seen Milner-Skudder in action on Westpac Stadium since the 2015 season due to injury.

On the right wing Aso picked up where left off against the Sunwolves in week one when he raced onto a Barrett chip kick then sprinted 60 metres for his first try.

Laumape then barged his way over from a dominant scrum and it was 19-6 after 28 minutes.

The Hurricanes were just warming up. Aso got his second with some nice interplay from halfback TJ Perenara, then Proctor completed the first half scoring to make it 31-6 at halftime.

It was more of the same after the break as Ardie Savea, who had been all over the field in the first half, teamed up with his brother Julian to score under the cross bar.

The Rebels tried their best to get back into the game, but the Hurricanes pack was well on top and No 8 Prinsep grabbed his first try for his new club with 20 minutes to play to make it 45-6.

Julian Savea brought up the 50 for the home team when he steamed into the corner in front of the club supporter's club The Flying Squadron with Barrett knocking over the sideline conversion before subbing off for his brother Jordie.

The Hurricanes finished with a bang. Milner-Skudder scored two tries in five minutes before Laumape raced away for his second to cap off a satisfying afternoon.
