Canes run in seven tries against the Stormers

Breathtaking Canes finish ends Stormers challenge

It wasn't perfect, but it sure was exciting.

The Hurricanes have won their eleventh straight match at Westpac Stadium in style with a 41-22 win over a Stormers side that fought hard until being overrun in the final few minutes.

First five Beauden Barrett produced the big play with the match poised at 27-22 when he cross-kicked to wing Julian Savea to spark one of the tries of the season.

Savea caught Barrett's pinpoint kick 20 metres from his own try line, ran over the top of his opposite and streaked into space before feeding Ngani Laumape for a try that brought the 16,500 strong crowd to their feet.

Barrett capped off the match with a try on fulltime to give the scoreboard a misleading look after a match that was perhaps the toughest of the Hurricanes eight wins in 2017.

The win sets up a block buster match against the unbeaten, New Zealand Conference leading Crusaders in Christchurch next week.

But for now, Hurricanes fans can reflect on another exciting night at Westpac Stadium that saw their side score seven tries to the Stormers one.

Four of those tries came from attacking kicks with Cory Jane starting things off when he chopped the angle to score under the posts early in the match from a Beauden Barrett kick-pass.

Jordie Barrett would be next to benefit from a teammate's boot when he followed up a TJ Perenara dab into the in-goal to steal the ball from a Stormers defender and plonk it near the dead ball line.

The Hurricanes 12-3 lead became 17-3 after just 23 minutes when another Beauden Barrett cross kick found Savea, who kept the ball alive on the touch line to score his side's third try.

The Stormers struck back with a try from a rolling maul, but Beauden Barrett had one more cross kick to unleash before halftime, this time finding brother Jordie for the try and a 22-16 halftime lead.

Written off by most before the match, the visitor's showed their character to come out firing after the break and, led by loose forward Siya Kolisi, fought back via two SP Marais penalties to tie the scores at 22-22.

When Hurricanes loose forward Brad Shields was sinbinned the Hurricanes first home loss of the season looked possible, but the defending Super Rugby champions dug deep with the help of a bench that provided immediate impact.

Laumape used his strength to twist over in the corner and then, with seven minutes to play, Beauden Barrett produced one final, audacious cross kick to put the Stormers away.

Hurricanes captain TJ Perenara explained the team's tactics after the match.

"The way they were defending, they shut down us running short. They had a guy in the backfield on the other side of the field to stop our kicking game, so our only real option outside of a crossfield kick was kicking it out 20 metres and that's what they wanted.

"They'd been going to mauls all day so us turning the ball over in a wide channel's probably a better option than giving them a lineout maul 20 metres out from our own line.

"We've got to trust our instincts and trust our skills. Sometimes it might not work, but I'd rather us try [something] and live with those consequences rather than kick a ball out 20 metres and give them what they actually want."

The win was a fitting celebration of club night with the Hurricanes fans and players donning their local jerseys in a nod to their rugby roots.

Hurricanes head coach Chris Boyd wasn't entirely happy with the performance, but said he had always expected the Stormers to put up a genuine fight on the night.

"The boys are a bit grumpy actually. Somebody just said [in the dressing room] you've just won by 40-something to 22, seven tries to one, don't forget that," Boyd said. "But there's some parts of that game that we're not happy with."
