Hurricanes fans have spoken and voted on what they believe is the best possible 90s line-up from the players who wore the swirl for the club’s first four years in Super Rugby.
Starting at the back, there was never any doubt who would wear the No 15 jersey with Christian Cullen supported in the back three by fellow international greats Doug Howlett and Captain Hurricane himself – Tana Umaga.
The Hurricanes first ever try scorer Alama Iremia is in the midfield with Jason O’Halloran while the halves pairing features the ever reliable David Holwell playing outside of Ofisa Tonu’u.
Playing off the back of the scrum is the tough Flio Tiatia with Kupu Vanisi and Andrew Blowers rounding off a punishing loose forward trio.
The locks are not short of height or size with Mark Cooksley and Dion Waller binding together.
That leaves the front row – or the captain’s row with the Gordon Slater, Norm Hewitt and Mark Allen all former leaders of the Hurricanes.
More than 50,000 votes were received from Hurricanes fans across the world for the best 15 players in their positions out of the 68 who represented the first four teams in the club’s history. After narrowing it down fans had 30 players to select on polls across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter in the last fortnight.
