Hurricanes beat Chiefs 25-9 to advance to Super Rugby final

Hurricanes to play Lions in Super Rugby final

The Hurricanes have advanced to the Investec Super Rugby final for the second year running after a comprehensive 25-9 win over the Chiefs in Wellington.

Coach Chris Boyd's side will play South African Conference champions the Lions next Saturday at Westpac Stadium.

The Lions present a formidable finals opponent after scoring five tries in a 42-30 win over the Highlanders in Johannesburg on Sunday morning (NZT).

The Lions finished the regular season with the same record as the Hurricanes having won eleven matches and lost four.

The Hurricanes beat the Lions convincingly, 50-17 when the sides met in Johannesburg on May 1.

Against the Chiefs the Hurricanes were defensively impregnable against the Chiefs in front of 25,600 fans and added three tries for good measure in a dominant semifinal win.

First five Beauden Barrett was again electric with an intercept try that brought the house down, and a brilliant chip and chase to set up second five Willis Halaholo for the first try of the match.

No 8 Victor Vito got the Hurricanes other try after halfback and captain TJ Perenara had dummied the Chiefs defence from the back of a scrum.

Barrett continued his excellent goal kicking form to add two conversions and two penalties, while lock Michael Fatialofa was tireless with ball in hand and openside Ardie Savea immense in all facets, but it was the home team's defence that stood out most.

The Hurricanes have not conceded a try for more than three hours and kept their line intact against the Chiefs just as they had against the Sharks a week earlier during the quarterfinal.

The backline, led by centre Matt Proctor and wings Cory Jane and Jason Woodward, didn't let the Chiefs move the ball wide to their threats Damian McKenzie, Seta Tamanivalu and James Lowe.

The forward pack just kept coming forward with Vaea Fifita's shoulder prominent, Brad Shields tireless and props Loni Uhila and Ben May both powerful figures close to the rucks.

Hurricanes season captain and regular hooker Dane Coles was ruled out of the match before kick off with a rib injury and his replacement Ricky Riccitelli stepped up with a mature display as did his replacement in the second half Leni Apisai.

With Perenara and Barrett guiding the ship and fullback James Marshall chiming in where needed it was a complete team effort.

Testament to the defensive effort was that the Chiefs were held out during a goal line stand in the first half and eventually finished with two McKenzie penalties for their efforts.

Scorers:

Hurricanes 25 (Willis Halaholo, Beauden Barrett, Victor Vito tries, Barrett 2 con, 2 pen) Chiefs 9 (Damian McKenzie 3 pen). HT: 15-6.
