Hurricanes enjoy positive first hit-out

A really positive week ended in the best possible fashion for the Hurricanes as they beat the Crusaders 43-22 in their first pre-season hit-out in Greymouth on Friday night.

While flooding had caused some damage in the township the previous day, the playing surface at Rugby Park was more than suitable for the Hurricanes as they ran in seven tries to four, including a hat-trick to Jonah Lowe.

"It was a god hit-out from both sides," Hurricanes assistant coach Jason Holland said.

"It was a pleasure to play against such opposition because we've been playing against each other for seven weeks."

Holland felt they had transferred the good work they had put in during their camp in Gisborne on to the field where they implemented a lot of the strategies they had focused on.

"It was all about who was getting over the gain line and we got some really good attack shape going in the first half hour of the game."

The Hurricanes started the match really well, showing the confidence to find space with long passes to the fringes as well as making the advantage line really well through their ball carriers.

That execution saw them shoot out to a 17-point lead in as many minutes before they conceded a try to the defending champions.

From that point the Hurricanes continued to play well and got out to a healthy 24-5 lead at the break.

While the Crusaders came back in the second half the Hurricanes finished strongly, scoring the last try to put the seal on a good week.

While the result was obviously pleasing for the Hurricanes coaching staff, Holland said it was just as important that they continued to build the team spirit after such a positive week.

"A lot of our option taking was also really good, especially this early in the season.

"We've obviously got a lot of work to do but it was good to see the boys put others in holes and scoring some tries."

The Hurricanes now head back to Wellington where they will prepare to travel to Brisbane for the Global Tens.
