Hurricanes Poua Step Off the Field to Support Hutt Valley Riding for the Disabled
The Hurricanes Poua traded their sprigs for riding boots and spent a meaningful day working with Hutt Valley ‘Riding for the Disabled on Wednesday’, a local organisation that’s making a powerful impact on those with physical, emotional and social challenges.
Riding for the Disabled offers a unique mix of therapeutic, educational, and recreational riding programmes, all designed to boost independence, self-esteem, and physical ability for people experiencing health conditions or impairments.
For the players, it was an opportunity to step away from the rugby field and experience firsthand the transformative power of equine therapy.
“It was a really rewarding day for us,” said Hurricanes captain, Jackie Patea-Fereti, “Spending time with these incredible people and learning about the work they do really reminded us of how powerful movement and community can be. We’re so grateful for the chance to be part of something so special.”
Hutt Valley Riding for the Disabled Centre Coordinator, Bronwyn Hussey said:
“The Poua players and management were awesome. They enthusiastically embraced all of the dirty jobs that we never seem to have time to do – like water blasting the stage and ramp, water blasting the kickboards in the arena and washing down the horse stalls. We really appreciate the mahi."
The visit was part of the Hurricanes Poua's ongoing efforts to make a positive impact beyond the game. With a mission to unite and excite, the team are on a mission to create lasting connections in the community and influence the growth of women’s rugby in the area.
It was a fitting way to wrap up the players first official pre-season camp, which started last Saturday with a gruelling training session at Linton Military Camp in Palmerston North. With connection at front of mind, the squad then camped out at Takapuwahia Marae in Titahi Bay, Porirua, before heading back to NZCIS for some intensive training.
Hutt Valley Riding for the Disabled continues to provide valuable services to those who need it most, and the Hurricanes Poua are proud to lend their support to this important work.
