Hurricanes Reflect on Player Achievements as They Look Toward a Promising 2025 Super Rugby Pacific Season

As 2024 draws to a close, the Hurricanes are looking back on a standout year, packed with incredible individual achievements, player departures, and the club continuing to build on its proud legacy internationally.

After impressing in the Super Rugby Pacific season, Peter Lakai and Ruben Love bolster the current number of All Blacks in the squad to seven. Both players made their debuts against Japan, with Lakai impressing further by playing another 79 minutes against France and scoring his maiden try in the black jersey.

In addition to the All Blacks success, seven more Hurricanes players earned well-deserved spots on the All Blacks XV tour, with loose forward Du'Plessis Kirifi proudly named captain of the side and was later called in as injury cover for the All Blacks.

Kirifi’s captaincy nod comes after a cracking NPC campaign, where the Wellington Lions skipper led his team to victory, taking out a strong Bay of Plenty side in their home final. Teammate Riley Higgins also enjoyed a spectacular season, earning himself Wellington Rugby Football Union’s ‘Player of the Year’ award.

While there’s much to celebrate, the Hurricanes also acknowledge the departures of a few key players. Alongside international departees, Josh Moorby and Justin Sangster, TK Howden making the move south, to play for the Highlanders. These players have made valuable contributions to the Hurricanes, and the club wishes them well as they take the next steps in their careers.  TJ Perenara and Ardie Savea also depart as true legends of the game.

“2024 has been a memorable year for the Hurricanes,” said Hurricanes CEO Avan Lee “The players have continued to push boundaries, not only in Super Rugby but on the international stage as well. We had an amazing season, and although we couldn’t quite take it out, we’ve got so much more to build on in 2025.”

“While it’s always tough to see players move on, the club is excited for what the future holds and is confident that the next generation of players coming through will continue to carry the team forward.”

Looking ahead, the Hurricanes are thrilled about emerging talent, such as exciting outside backs like Kade Banks, Fehi Fineanganofo, and Kini Naholo, all of whom are set to play pivotal roles in the 2025 season.

After a season-ending patella injury just six weeks into the 2024 campaign, Cam Roigard returns for 2025. The halfback dedicated six months to relentlessly rebuilding and strengthening his left knee. Known for his speed, tactical awareness and quick decision-making, Roigard has made a strong comeback, delivering a standout performance for the All Blacks on the Northern Tour.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Cam back for 2025,” said Lee. “The dedication he showed during his rehabilitation speaks volumes about his character—hard-working, focused, and fully committed. We also have a lot of exciting emerging talent, both within the squad and with new players joining the club. It’s shaping up to be a promising season for the Hurricanes.”
