With the Hurricanes Poua 2024 squad now named, we would like to introduce you to Hurricanes Poua #23, Teilah Ferguson.
The 23-year-old hails from Napier and is a dynamic midfield back. She started playing rugby when she was five years old but decided to take her game to another level when she moved to Dunedin to study Food Science and Psychology.
She experienced immediate success, playing three seasons with the Otago Spirit in the Farah Palmer Cup before moving on to the Wellington Pride in 2022. She made her debut in Super Rugby Aupiki for the Hurricanes Poua that same year.
Teilah, who is currently the Female Rugby Development Activator for Hawke’s Bay RFU, was born into a rugby-mad family.
Her mother Julie represented New Zealand in Rugby, Rugby League, and Touch Rugby. Teilah said her mother is her inspiration and is always there to motivate her when she needs it. Not only has Teilah’s mum been her inspiration, but they got to play alongside each other for the Hawke’s Bay Tuis this year!
“I have to say it was pretty surreal to be able to play alongside mum. Especially when she can run faster than you!”
Teilah said she is now looking forward to getting in camp and preparing for the upcoming season!
“I am super stoked to be a part of the Poua whānau again. I’m looking forward to building those connections off the field and being able to display that once we get to play. We want to be able to bring exciting footy to the table and thrill our fans!”
We asked Teilah some fun questions about herself heading into Super Rugby Aupiki 2024.

What are your goals as a professional rugby player? I would really like to use rugby as a tool to explore the world! Playing rugby in other areas around the globe would be a dream!

If you could have superpowers, what would it be? Teleportation so I can whip off to Bali for a day!
