Growing up, Vince Aso never saw himself wearing a black and yellow rugby jersey – in fact he was certain it would be blue.
Born and raised in Auckland, the now 25-year-old had no plans to move to Wellington and after graduating St Peter’s College, Aso started to make a name for himself in the 2013 ITM Cup.
Then, in 2015 he received a call from former Hurricanes coach, Chris Boyd.
“He offered me a two-year deal. I started asking my Auckland coaches about what to do as I’d also been asked to join the wider Blues squad at the time – but I saw the bigger opportunity to better my game and get out of my comfort zone ,” Aso says.
Fast track though to tonight, the outside centre is playing his 50th game of Super Rugby and says he’s very grateful for how his career has panned out.
“It’s always been my goal to play at least 50 games for a franchise. From here I want to reach the hundred mark and hopefully more. I’m just honoured, really.”
Whilst Wellington is now home for Aso, he says bringing up the 50-game milestone against the Blues makes it more special.
On top of that again, it’s mana moana night – a time to celebrate Maori and Pacific players in the rugby fraternity.
“I’m full Samoan. My parents migrated to New Zealand for a better life before they had me. I definitely feel as though I represent that community as a rugby player though,” Aso says.
He believes it’s the celebration of cultural diversity that’s helped embed rugby in the fabric of New Zealand.
“Everyone that has played before us has left a legacy inspiring Polynesian and Maori brothers to follow their dreams. Young boys like I was, growing up wanting to be like Jonah Lomu or Jerry Collins. I hope that variety of culture continues to build.”
Join the Hurricanes at Sky Stadium for Mana Moana Night on Saturday March 7 to celebrate our Maori and Pacific culture when the Blues come to town. Adults from $23.50 or 1 Adult & 1 Child in the Bluebridge Family Zone just $30.
