Members to ride free to 'Canes games

Hurricanes' members are set to benefit once again in 2016 through a newly developed partnership between the team, and NZ Bus.

The company has come on board as the transport partner for both the Hurricanes and Wellington Lions, and will offer free transport to games for all members, through its Go Wellington service.

Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee said there was something about the synergy between the black and yellow buses and the Hurricanes, which meant a partnership always seemed a likely possibility.

"Our research tells us that transport and parking costs are two reasons why some fans do not attend matches, so we were keen to address that issue.

"We're very grateful to NZ Bus for helping us make free transport available to our members, and we hope our fans enjoy more top class rugby in the capital as a result."

Go Wellington have a fleet of 223 buses that run throughout the Wellington city area. The partnership also includes the Valley Flyer service, which connects Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt, Eastbourne, Stokes Valley, and Wainuiomata to the city.

Members will simply need to flash their membership card to the driver on the day, for free travel to and from Westpac Stadium.

NZ Bus chief operating officer for the Southern Region, Tonia Haskell, said the Go Wellington parent company was delighted to join with the Hurricanes and Lions as their transport partner.

"As proud supporters of Wellington sport, we're very much looking forward to promoting rugby in the region.

"And with a player in the Hurricanes nicknamed 'The Bus', we felt it was only appropriate."

Media opportunity / A group of 10 Hurricanes will attempt to tow a 12 tonne Go Wellington bus up Freyberg St, Lyall Bay, tomorrow at 9.15am. If you would like to attend, please email Hannah before 5pm on Wednesday, December 2.
