Canes U18s run rampant against Crusaders Junior Knights

Canes U18s beat Crusaders U18s 64-20

The Hurricanes U18s have beaten the Crusaders Junior Knights 64-20 in Christchurch.

A few hours before the Hurricanes Super Rugby team beat the Crusaders at AMI  Stadium the club's young stars were putting on a show down the road.

With two tries to Fijian flyer Vilimoni Koroi and seven conversions to halfback Carlos Price, the Hurricanes U18s scored 47 unanswered points after trailing 20-17 at halftime.

The visitors were rocked early by two early tries to the Crusaders Knights who looked in control with first-five Will Havili's vision and tactical kicking earning his side an early territorial advantage.

The Hurricanes U18s hit back with two good tries of their own, but the home team held their lead going into the break thanks to a try to second-five Logan Bell.

It was a different story in the second half as the Hurricanes U18s went on a scoring spree.

Tries to prop Xavier Numia and No 8 Brayden Iose came quickly and with Havili substituted the home team seemed to lose structure and momentum.

Koroi crossed for two tries in quick succession before being replaced and suddenly the Hurricanes U18s had notched up 50 points.

The combination of halfback Price and first-five Lincoln McClutchie caused constant problems for the Crusaders Knights the hosts.

Price finished with a personal tally of 19 points including a try and seven conversions, while McClutchie created numerous opportunities for his outside backs.

For the home team, the right-wing, full-back combination of Mikaele Ravalawa and Ngane Punivai bamboozled the visitors defence on occasion and both scored good tries in the first half.

Ravalawa, a member of the Fiji sevens team at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games scythed through the Hurricanes defence early in the game, while his team-mate on the left-wing Leicester Fainga'anuku also looked dangerous.

Knights captain and open-side flanker Cam Russell battled gamely, while No. 8 Cruz Topai-Aveai refused to take a backward step.

However, none of them could nullify the impact of the Hurricanes reserves bench as late tries to Ueta Tufuga and Te Ariki Te Puni under-lined the visitor's superior depth.
