Hurricanes' hooker Motu Matu'u took time out this week to visit Plimmerton school and collect proceeds raised by the school for Vanuatu.
The school raised over $3800 which will be directed in part to two families who had lost their homes in the cyclone, while the bulk would be added to a wider pool used for a project that will be identified with the assistance of the NZ High Commission in Vanuatu.
Matu'u spoke at the school assembly about his visit to the island late last year with teammate Mark Abbott, to assist with building awareness around the issue of domestic violence.
Matu'u said the Vanuatu visit had been very enjoyable, particularly seeing the happiness and fun of the children, despite having far less than us in our schools and homes.
"Seeing the damage caused by the cyclone has just been devastating," he said.
"After visiting the island and its people, they're close to our hearts, so we're hoping we can continue this fundraising effort to help in other areas."
Matu'u and Abbott will be leading the charge through several projects over the coming weeks, along with other members of the squad.
Matu'u said he hoped to raise $50,000, and wanted to ensure the money was used on a project that would benefit Vanuatu in the long term.
Already several of the Hurricanes squad have offered up some unique opportunities that will assist with moving towards the target, so keep an eye out for the details!
