Billy Proctor and Layla Sae took out the top awards, as the Hurricanes celebrated their on-field success at the club’s annual awards evening.
20-year-old Harry Godfrey won two awards – winning both the Hurricanes U20 Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, following a breakout season with both the senior and U20 sides winning the Sir John Graham Player of the Tournament at the Super Rugby Under 20 Tournament in March.
Livewire half-back Cam Roigard was named Members’ Player of the Year, with loose forward Te Kamaka Howden taking out the Hunters Award in his second season with the club.
Ever-present in Hurricanes teams of late, Hawke’s Bay’s Devan Flanders was named the most improved player, highlighted by his 60m effort against the Brumbies to go with his 11 starts in the six jersey.
Jamie Booth picked up the Team Man Award. Popular amongst his peers, the North Harbour nine scooped up the award for the second year in a row.
The Hurricanes Best and Fairest award – voted for by the players was taken out by Captain, Ardie Savea – with the Japan bound centurion taking it out just ahead of fellow loose forwards Du’Plessis Kirifi and Brayden Iose.
After another standout campaign for the Hurricanes Poua – new Black Fern, Layla Sae took out the Hurricanes Poua Player of the Year award. Powerful and gifted with athletic ability, the former NZ Volleyball representative lead the line for the Poua in their second season, starting in all five matches for the Poua in year two.
Five seasons into his Super Rugby career – midfielder Billy Proctor was named Hurricanes Player of the year. A regular in the 13 jersey in the past couple of seasons, the St Pat’s Town product joined illustrious company, taking the top prize out on the men’s side.
International representation was also celebrated – with five Hurricanes Poua players signing on full-time with the Black Ferns, first-five Carys Dallinger joined the Wallaroos programme and 12 Hurricanes U20 Players being named in the NZ U20 wider squad (11 went on to be selected for the World Championship team.)
